Matsuhashi Farm: The Commitment to Cattle Feed and the Surrounding Natural Abundance

Matsuhashi Farm President and CEO, Yasuhito Matsuhashi

We do not use any imported ingredients in our feed. All raw materials are 100% sourced from Hokkaido. Our cattle eat mashed potatoes. To prevent digestive issues, we use feed made from waste wheat, rejected non-standard beans, okara (soy pulp), and beer lees. This results in the cattle producing fermented manure. Ultimately, this manure returns to the fields, becoming soil. The soil then grows wheat and beans, which in turn become feed. It’s a cycle that benefits both the cattle and the land.

When compost rich in fermentation bacteria is mixed with other bacteria, it creates high-quality compost. The power of microorganisms is incredible; in some parts of the farm where compost is dug up, the temperature can reach 50 to 60 degrees Celsius. The steam rising from it is due to the activity of the fermentation bacteria breaking down the straw, generating heat.
